Description
Traditional chiropractic believes that a vertebral subluxation or misaligned spinal joint interferes with the body’s normal function. The main chiropractic procedure is adjustment of the spine, other joints and soft tissue in order to relieve the pressure on the nerves. Today most chiropractors add other modalities to the spinal manipulation such as exercise, massage, acupuncture, nutritional supplements and herbs.
The scope of practice of chiropractors varies from state to state, with some states allowing broad treatment of human ailments while others are very restrictive and allow a very narrow scope of practice. The different laws in each state also determine if a chiropractor can conduct laboratory and diagnostic tests as well as dispense nutritional supplements and utilize other complementary modalities.
Statistical studies show the following:
• In the U.S., chiropractic is the largest alternative medical profession.
• Ninety-four percent (94%) of all spinal manipulations are performed by chiropractors.
• As of 2004 California had the most active licensed chiropractors with New York a distant second.
• Approximately 30% of the U.S. population aged 18 and older have used chiropractic.
